Navajo sandstone is an exquisite stone that comes from the deserts of the American southwest. The raw stone is sliced into thin slabs and polished to produce the landscape-like images that form the backdrop to the paintings. The angle at which the stone is sliced determines the nature of the image that results on the slab surface

The subject matter of such paintings ranges from reconstructions of prehistoric scenes to reproductions of museum dioramas to contemporary wildlife or landscape scenes.
