Icarosaurus siefkeri (Julius T. Csotonyi)

Icarosaurus siefkeri (2010)

Digital painting / photographic composite

The Triassic gliding reptile Icarosaurus siefkeri, illustrated here, and the living flying dragon (Draco volans) are an excellent example of convergent evolution, in which relatively unrelated organisms under similar selection pressures independently evolve similar characteristics, in this case, extended ribs to support a gliding membrane.
