Gorgosaurus libratus

Gorgosaurus libratus (2006)

Original size: 7 X 10 in; Colored pencils (Prismacolor & Derwent) on illustration board.

Above is the completed drawing of Gorgosaurus libratus from Alberta, Canada. While the arm feathers are speculative, the basal tyrannosaur Dilong is known to have possessed an integument resembling hair-like feathers along its back and tail, and therefore perhaps this sort of body covering was conserved in later members of the group as well. I have proposed the feathers of Gorgosaurus here to fill the role of display structures, for courtship or species recognition.
